A list and overview of all the member groups on Smoke & Mirrors.
Those who have promised to nuture and protect the students, faculty work within Brakebills. They can range from a variety of different positions, from teachers to librarians to general staff.
Students go to Brakebills in order to learn about magic. They take an extrance exam to determine their magical prowess, and can either pass or fail from there. Those who pass go on to make up the large population of the school. Those who fail get their memories of the test and magic erased.
Hedge-witches are, for lack of a better term, rejected magicians. Either those who never got into Brakebills, were never invited, or were kicked out, these people have slogged through all the phony magic in the world to find something worth while. They stay in safe houses mostly located in abandoned warehouses and bars, learning mediocre magic. Though not all the magic they learn is useless.
Normal everyday civilians, be they magical or not. Adult magicians who have graduated from schooling can be found all over, sometimes squatting sometimes living in luxury. Considering magicians never have to worry about food or money really, they live doing whatever they'd like. Alumni of Brakebills have keys to get back in, and will often visit the school to mentor students.
Creatures are magical beings. There's a variety of species that live in the world, adapting from their myths and legends to modern times where they can walk freely among men, or not.
